In response to the Ebola outbreak in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Rwandan government announces increased screening measures at entry points.

The Rwandan Ministry of Health has announced that no cases of Ebola have been reported on its territory to date. However, in light of the outbreak affecting the Ituri province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kigali has decided to enhance screening and vigilance measures at border entry points.
According to a statement from the Rwandan government, these measures aim to prevent any potential spread of the virus. Rwanda is closely monitoring the epidemiological situation in Ituri, where cases have been reported. Local sources indicate that the province is facing an increase in suspected and confirmed cases of Ebola.
Currently, it is reported that 246 suspected cases have been identified in Ituri, with 80 suspected deaths related to the outbreak. Only 8 cases have been confirmed by laboratories, but the situation remains critical with a rising number of deaths among infected individuals.
The interim military governor for Ituri has acknowledged these alarming figures and is calling for increased mobilization of resources to combat this outbreak. The international community is also being called upon to provide support in this fight.
Rwanda is no stranger to the cross-border implications of Ebola outbreaks. In the past, the country has taken drastic measures, such as temporarily closing its borders with the DRC during epidemic peaks. In August 2019, LE JOURNAL.AFRICA reported that the two countries had agreed to establish mechanisms to reduce the risk of virus transmission.
Rwandan health authorities are encouraging the population to remain vigilant and report any symptoms related to Ebola. Awareness campaigns are underway to inform citizens about preventive measures to adopt.
Meanwhile, the Rwandan government has set up medical teams ready to respond quickly in the event of cases appearing on its territory. These teams will be deployed at strategic crossing points between the two countries.
The current situation underscores the importance of strengthened regional cooperation in the fight against epidemics. Rwandan and Congolese authorities must work together to ensure the health security of populations living along their common border.
