One confirmed case of Ebola virus disease is being managed in the city of Goma, according to a statement from the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23). No new infections have been recorded in areas occupied by rebels.

The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) published an update on Monday, May 18, regarding the situation of Ebola virus disease in the liberated areas. Despite the confirmation of a case in the city of Goma, health authorities assert that the response is active and that no new cases have been recorded.
According to the official statement signed by Lawrence Kanyuka, Head of the Communication Department and Spokesperson for the AFC/M23, health surveillance teams deployed in the field are actively continuing follow-up, investigation, and prevention operations since the confirmation of the first case in Goma.
To date, 189 contact cases have already been identified and investigated in Goma. On Monday, May 18, 2026, 22 samples were sent to the laboratory of the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) for analysis. Of the available results, 5 were negative, while the others are still under analysis. Additionally, in the city of Bukavu, a suspected case has been reported. The sample taken and sent to Goma for analysis also turned out to be negative.
Currently, only one confirmed case of Ebola is being managed in Goma, and no new cases have been recorded in all areas occupied by the rebellion. The AFC/M23 emphasizes that the situation is under control thanks to the vigilance of health teams.
The Alliance Fleuve Congo calls on the population to "remain calm and vigilant," while strictly adhering to barrier measures to prevent any spread of the disease. "We urge every citizen to continue applying basic prevention measures: regular hand washing, maintaining physical distancing, and immediate reporting of any suspected cases," stated Lawrence Kanyuka in the statement.
This update comes in a context where areas occupied by the AFC/M23 are facing several health challenges. The responsiveness of the deployed teams and transparency in communication aim to reassure the populations while avoiding panic. The AFC/M23, through its health department, indicates it will continue to strengthen epidemiological surveillance across all territory under its control.
