In the Central African Republic, Cardinal Dieudonné Nzapalainga paid vibrant tribute to Imam Kobine Layama, president of the Central African Republic's Supreme Islamic Council, who died Saturday evening in Bangui at the age of 62. The Central African cardinal honored him for playing a central role in the pursuit of peace alongside Catholic and Protestant leaders, comparing him to one of the three stones of a traditional Central African hearth and speaking of an immense loss for the Central African Republic.

Today, there is a stone that is not there. So, two stones remain and you understand why we are moved, why we are in pain because a part of ourselves that is not there and we are suffering. That is why we say that this moment is a painful moment. Imam Kobine was a man of integrity, a man who was able to unite his community, he is a scholar but one who had great simplicity, not to say humility.
