Political figures and human rights defenders question the methods of Mali's State Security in the fight against terrorism.

In a climate of rising tensions in Mali, accusations are emerging regarding the involvement of State Security in abductions. According to RFI, following the kidnapping of political figures and human rights defenders, the modus operandi used resembles that of Malian security forces.
Professor Akandji-Kombé, interviewed by RFI, emphasizes that "the Malian state has every legitimacy to protect the nation against terrorism," but he warns against potential abuses. He stresses the importance of an approach that respects human rights: "It cannot be at the cost of disregarding the law and rights. One cannot defend a democratic society through an organization that acts outside the law."
Criticism is also being voiced within the political class. Members of the M5-RFP movement express their concerns about a possible instrumentalization of security forces under the guise of anti-terrorism efforts. One of them states: "We cannot accept that the fight against terrorism serves as an excuse to violate the fundamental rights of Malian citizens."
This situation is not isolated. In March 2023, families and support groups for local hostages mobilized to denounce the persistent shadow hanging over abductions in Mali. Collected testimonies reveal a worried and disillusioned population in the face of the lack of clear responses.
Indeed, a previous report highlighted that abduction and arbitrary detention operations appear to have intensified in recent years, exacerbating a climate of distrust towards institutions. Unions and non-governmental organizations are calling for an independent investigation into these allegations.
The international community is also closely monitoring these developments. According to a Reuters dispatch, several countries have expressed their concerns about the security situation in Mali and the potential consequences for human rights.
While the Malian government claims to act to protect its citizens, the question remains: how far can one go in the fight against terrorism without compromising democratic principles? The debates surrounding this issue are more relevant than ever as Mali continues to face significant security challenges.
