Head of State Félix Tshisekedi was elected vice-president of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) during the 41st summit held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 in Malawi under the theme: 'Strengthening production capacities in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic with a view to implementing inclusive and sustainable economic and industrial reforms'.

During this summit, the DRC is still hoping for the election of Faustin Luanga to the position of executive secretary of SADC.
After this opening ceremony, the heads of state and government will continue deliberations in closed session in order to make decisions on this institution, particularly the choice of the new executive secretary.
This ceremony was also marked by the transfer of power from incoming SADC President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of Malawi and outgoing President Philippe Nyusi of Mozambique.
For the remainder of the work, since the preparatory ministerial discussions did not produce consensus, it is therefore up to the heads of state and government present at this summit to settle this question. Their decision will be made public on Wednesday.
Note that 16 heads of state and government, including Congolese Félix Tshisekedi, took part in this ceremony being held in Lilongwe, Malawi.
