Concerning school dropout rates were observed during the first trimester of the 2019-2020 school year in Kayanza province, caused largely by pregnancies among schoolgirls and rural exodus. The Provincial Directorate of Education, Technical and Professional Training is calling for triangular collaboration (family, student and teacher) in order to reverse the trend for the following trimesters.

In an interview granted to JA last Thursday, the Provincial Director of Education (DPE) Désiré Hatungimana paints a heavy picture of school dropout cases with an exact number of 3,781 of which 3,600 are from primary school and 181 from post-primary school.
According to this school authority, the numbers are distributed as follows by communes: 323 in the Butaganzwa school commune, 225 in that of Gahombo. The Gatara commune recorded 316 cases of school dropouts while the Kabarore commune counts 496 cases. 541 cases of school dropouts were recorded in the Kayanza school commune, 423 in Matongo commune, while the Muhanga commune counts 428 cases and Muruta commune 339. The Rango commune alone bears 690 cases of school dropouts.
The Provincial Director of Education, Technical and Professional Training in Kayanza indicates that the causes of these dropouts are multiple. He lists among others unwanted pregnancies among schoolgirls, mentioning 25 girls who abandoned school as a result of pregnancies. Poverty, rural exodus, small commerce and lack of interest are other causes cited by the school authority in Kayanza province.
Désiré Hatungimana calls on young people to take enthusiasm for school, which he describes as a source of sustainable development. He invites parents to follow more closely the education of their children, particularly by showing them the importance of school and encouraging them for full commitment.
