The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR) officially launched on Thursday, March 19, 2020, excavation work at the Manyovu site where remains of victims from the 1972 war will be unearthed. Located on Muremera hill in Giheta commune, this site comprises 3 mass graves as indicated by CVR President Pierre Claver Ndayicariye.

The administrator of Giheta commune indicated that cohabitation is good between the different political parties and that even displaced persons from the Mashitsi site have returned to their hills. He asked the population to share what they witnessed about the 1972 massacres so that the truth may be known in order to preserve peace for future generations.
CVR President Pierre Claver Ndayicariye made known that to find this site, the administration and the CVR worked based on information provided by the population of that time, which led to identifying 3 mass graves in a cassava field.
Pierre Claver Ndayicariye emphasized that only truth could lead to lasting peace for Burundians. He called on the Burundian population to understand the CVR's work, which has no other purpose than the knowledge of truth so that reconciliation may be effective in Burundi for present and future generations in order to have a Burundi free from repetitive fratricidal wars.
For Burundi to live in unity and lasting peace, the reality of the past must be known by the public, families of victims must forgive, and those who killed must dare to ask for forgiveness, emphasized Pierre Claver Ndayicariye.
He asked the Burundian and international community to support the CVR in its work of seeking truth and reconciliation of Burundians. And clarifying that the CVR stems from the Arusha peace accords negotiated between Burundians and comes to shed light on crimes committed in the past that have bereaved the country in order to soothe the trauma of wounded memories.
Knowledge of the truth about the past, forgiveness and reconciliation of Burundians could bring peace, continued Pierre Claver Ndayicariye.
The Manyovu site is the third excavated by the CVR after that of Mashitsi in the same Giheta commune and that of Ruvubu.
