The African G4 is an informal diplomatic grouping launched in Brussels last week, on the sidelines of the latest European Union-Africa summit. It was announced on February 18 by a statement from the Nigerian presidency. Its purpose is to coordinate, analyze, consult and find solutions to the continent's challenges by proposing a strategic mechanism that aims, according to these countries, to provide "practical and effective" solutions to the various problems Africa faces.
Morocco expressed its discontent on Wednesday, February 23 because, Rabat explains, the four countries forming this group are known for their positions hostile to the Moroccan Kingdom.
Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria and Ethiopia do indeed share the same point of view on multiple issues concerning the continent: they are against foreign interference, they reject Israel's accession as an observer member to the African Union, they recognize the Democratic Arab Sahrawi Republic as a member of the AU, and therefore the independence of Western Sahara. They also share the same vision of security in the Sahel and particularly in Mali at a time when France is preparing to leave the country.
The statement from the Nigerian presidency specifies that an official summit between the four heads of state will be convened in the coming months to chart a roadmap. However, no precise date has been communicated.
