In Algeria, the Movement of the Society for Peace (MSP) welcomed its legislative election results on Wednesday despite record abstention. Wednesday, at a press conference, Abderrazak Makri, the leader of the Movement of the Society for Peace said he was open to participating in the next government under conditions. "We will study the proposal to participate in the government by examining its program and political vision," he declared.
According to political scientist Hasni Abidi, "the Islamists want to participate in the management of power in Algeria and never practice the empty chair policy," noting that "they know that time is working in their favor."
The Algerian presidency has not reacted publicly to the MSP's statements, but negotiations are taking place discreetly pending the final announcement of the legislative election results.
In fact, Abdelmajid Tebboune is moving toward the formation of a government of national consensus bringing together the various parties that won the early elections of June 12.
According to the new 2020 Constitution, the majority in the Assembly must be formed of 204 seats, which obliges the National Liberation Front, which won 105 seats, to ally itself with the National Democratic Rally, and also with the Islamists of the MSP and with independents, in order to have 51% of Parliament.
The MSP had several ministers in the government in the mid-1990s. It chose to move into opposition in 2012 after the Arab Spring. It withdrew again in 2019 by opposing a new term for President Bouteflika.
