This clash occurred Tuesday, June 15 in the In Araban sector in Mali, southwest of Ménaka, in the Liptako, a few kilometers from the Nigerien border. A Nigerien soldier from the 114th internal security company was killed during the fighting, another was wounded.
These Nigerien soldiers were supported by commando groups from the Barkhane force, two of whose soldiers were also wounded. Their condition is stable and their life is not in danger.
This combined operation by Nigerien and French forces, the military general staff emphasizes, was a normal and planned operation along the Malian border against elements of the terrorist group Islamic State in the Great Sahara (EIGS).
Soldiers on the ground received support from Mirage 2000s and helicopters. The general staff specifies that about ten terrorists were "neutralized", either killed or taken prisoner. Without specifying whether EIGS leaders were among them.
