The experts warned that Tanzania risked facing a third wave if consequential measures were not taken. The president promised a response on Tuesday.
"The government must clearly inform the population about the circulation of Covid-19 in the country and take all necessary measures, at all levels, to prevent the third wave of this disease", warned Professor Said Aboud, from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and chairman of the special committee of scientists.
The latest statistics made public by Tanzania on the number of people infected with coronavirus date back to April 2020, under the rule of the country's former leader, the late John Magufuli, who always denied the existence of coronavirus.
"The special committee also advises the government to use competent institutions in order to expand its health protocol and allow the use of vaccines to prevent Covid-19 and protect the population, as recommended by the World Health Organization, because our analyses have shown that vaccines are safe and effective," insisted Professor Said Aboud. "It is scientifically proven."
