Teachers' unions have decided to strike for 24 hours on March 1st in Senegal following the arrest of teachers in recent days in Dakar and other regions. These arrests would be linked to the Ousmane Sonko affair, this opposition leader cited in a rape case that has been making headlines for nearly 3 weeks. They are accused of wanting to foment public disorder. A reason deemed insufficient by these unionists.

This Monday, the G20, which brings together about twenty teachers' unions, will observe a black day and a 24-hour strike, as a show of support for several teachers arrested in recent days in Senegal.
Among those arrested is a unionist from the unitary framework of middle and secondary education unions, apprehended last Saturday during a demonstration at Independence Square.
"What we want is for the teacher to be given his place, explains Gounia Niang, vice-coordinator of the G20. Even if he must be apprehended, there is a way to do it. Since we have been on the union scene, this is the first time we have seen a teacher apprehended in his classroom. It is a humiliation. That is why we wanted to make a statement to tell the State "stop". It must stop. We will be guarantors of the interests of teachers and of education but also of the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution. "
For now, neither the police who carried out these arrests nor the teachers' unions are able to provide the exact number of teachers arrested in recent days, nor the reasons. We were told that some of these teachers are members or sympathizers of the Pastef party of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.
