European parliamentarians have expressed their skepticism in a letter addressed to the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
► Read also: Burundi and the EU begin dialogue concerning the lifting of sanctions
Among them, European deputy Marie Arena, who recalls that the Cotonou Agreements require concrete guarantees from the partner state in terms of respect for human rights before any resumption of dialogue.
The situation in Burundi remains concerning. We still have a real ban on freedom of expression, whether at the level of the media but also at the level of NGOs which are mostly in exile. We also have political prisoners […] and displaced persons […] There are conditions for resuming dialogue with the Burundians.
