UNSMIL announced on Thursday, January 21, the holding of a meeting scheduled for early February in Geneva, with the presence of the 74 members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF). The goal, the UN hopes, will be to finally appoint the unified Libyan authority for a final transition period. This announcement comes just three days after agreement on the selection mechanism for representatives of the next unified government.

With the announcement of this Geneva meeting intended to elect the unified executive, a glimmer of hope is reborn and a new step is taken towards the elections scheduled for December 24, 2021.
A major step towards the unification of the country has therefore been taken, with the vote this week on a mechanism for selecting the future leaders of the transition. A success that was unanimously hailed by Western and regional forces.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) formed a committee of three people from the political forum to examine eligible candidacies and draw up two lists: one for the choice of Prime Minister, the other for the choice of President of the Presidential Council and his two vice-presidents.
It provided practical and technical advice for candidacy. Each candidate must be recommended by two members of the political forum and each member of the political forum is entitled to only one recommendation. To win, the candidate must obtain a majority of 70% of votes. Potential candidates will have one week to apply. The deadline expires on January 28.
These advances towards the designation of executive power are, however, confronted with difficulties that come from elsewhere. According to the political agreement, militias should be dissolved and mercenaries departed by this Saturday, January 23.
This week, Stephanie Williams denounced the entire Libyan political class that is clinging to power to defend its own interests.
