The NGO 'Tournons la Page' denounces the incarceration without trial of Oumar Sylla, nicknamed 'Foniké Mengué'. A member of the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC), he was arrested in Conakry on September 19 for 'illegal gathering on public roads'. Held for three months at Conakry Central Prison...

Oumar Sylla's state of health concerns the NGO, which in turn denounces the prolonged pretrial detention of this activist.
Ibrahima Diallo, the coordinator of 'Tournons la page', was reached by Bineta Diagne of RFI's Africa service. "Since December 3, the investigating judge closed his case. Since then, it has been blocked and we don't know why they refuse to refer Omar to the court so he can be tried. It's a pretrial detention that keeps dragging on... he has been in prison for three months, and all he is asking is to be tried.
We, 'Tournons la page', condemn this situation and we believe that this is a punishment being inflicted on Oumar Sylla, simply because he is one of the leaders who are opposed to Mr. Alpha Condé's third term."

Oumar Sylla, alias Foniké Mengué, is a member of the National Coordination of the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution, which brings together most of civil society and the political opposition. He had been arrested in spring 2020 and then released in August, before being arrested again in September.
The incumbent Guinean president, Alpha Condé, was reelected for a third term in October 2020 following months of demonstrations by civil society organizations against this new term.
