Egypt is hosting two emergency African summits on Tuesday, April 23 on the situation in Sudan and Libya. President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi will lead these two meetings in his capacity as the incumbent chairman of the African Union.

The first summit will address the situation in Sudan where popular protest continues despite the military's removal of President Omar el-Béchir. The military, headed by its new chief, General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan, who leads the Transitional Military Council. Several Arab countries, including Egypt, have given it their implicit support. However, the protesters who remain mobilized are demanding a civilian government.

The second summit will address the situation in Libya where the chief of the Libyan National Army, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, launched a vast offensive against Tripoli three weeks ago, which is held by the Government of National Accord, supported by the international community.

Marshal Haftar has received implicit support from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, while Tripoli is supported by Qatar and Turkey. Despite hundreds of deaths, calls for a ceasefire have still not succeeded and the UN Security Council is divided on the adoption of a resolution.

The summits will bring together the presidents of South Africa, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Djibouti and Somalia, as well as senior Ethiopian, South Sudanese officials and the president of the AU Commission.
