South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed solidarity with the Democratic Republic of Congo, affected by a new Ebola outbreak.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is facing its 17th Ebola virus outbreak, which has been identified in the health zones of Mongwalu, Rwampanga, and Bunia, located in the Ituri province in the eastern part of the country. This concerning situation has prompted international reactions, including from Cyril Ramaphosa, the South African president.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 16, 2026, by the DR Congo Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ramaphosa expressed his solidarity with the Congolese government and people. He also offered any necessary support in the fight against this viral disease. According to the Congolese ministry, this declaration aims to strengthen bilateral relations between Kinshasa and Pretoria.
The current outbreak comes as the DR Congo has already experienced several waves of this disease. Previous reports indicate that considerable efforts have been made to contain past outbreaks, but the resurgence of the virus once again poses a major challenge to local health systems.
Congolese authorities have intensified prevention and response measures in the face of this new threat. Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, the Congolese president, announced during a strategic meeting that resources would be mobilized to strengthen the capacities of medical teams on the ground.
Non-governmental organizations and international agencies are also being called upon to intervene in order to provide logistical and medical support. The international community is closely monitoring the situation in the DR Congo, a country that has already lost thousands of lives due to Ebola in previous outbreaks.
The Congolese Minister of Public Health has issued a call for vigilance among populations living in affected areas. Awareness campaigns are underway to inform citizens about the preventive measures to adopt to avoid the spread of the virus.
The resurgence of Ebola in the DR Congo raises concerns about the capacity of the health system to cope with this health crisis. Past experiences show that each outbreak requires a rapid and coordinated response to limit its impact on the population.
