The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is renouncing its bid to become a member of the security council. Sources at POLITICO.CD from the Presidency of the Republic state that the DRC has ultimately decided to withdraw its candidacy to occupy the seat of non-permanent member on the Security Council. The DRC was competing with Gabon whose candidacy is supported by the African Union. The seat of non-permanent member on the UN Security Council is reserved for Central Africa starting in 2022.

During the last Executive Council of the AU (African Union), chaired by Félix Tshisekedi, which took place on February 3-4, 2021 in Addis Ababa, Gabon had been designated to be on the security council, while Ghana had been selected for the seat reserved for West Africa, as evidenced by the report of the ministerial committee.
