Dr Thaddée Ndikumana, Minister of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS, held a media workshop on Monday, July 20, 2020, announcing the start of maternal and child health week. This week falls during a period when the country is in the midst of a full awareness campaign against the COVID-19 pandemic.

A week that began on Tuesday, July 21 and closes on Thursday, July 23, 2020, Dr Thaddée Ndikumana said that during this period 4,708,676 children will receive Albendazole, 1,823,873 will receive vitamin A while 297,816 pregnant women will also receive Albendazole.
The Minister specified that awareness against COVID-19 will take place in all the sub-hills of the country, estimated at 8,017. To this end, 11,948 community health workers have been trained, as well as 2,929 hill chiefs. Also, 792 health center managers and 792 vaccination officers at the health center level are mobilized to teach the population how to prevent and fight COVID-19.
These agents will administer activities of giving Albendazole to pregnant women (second and third trimester) and children aged 1 to 14 years as well as vitamin A to children aged 6 to 59 months. These trained agents will also intervene in health posts that the government plans to set up on all hills of the country," he said.
In assessing the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS indicated that since the first day of COVID-19 testing in Burundi and during the mass screening campaign in the city of Bujumbura, 328 cases have tested positive. 237 of these have recovered while 90 are still undergoing treatment. A single death has been recorded.
It should be noted that awareness of the fight against COVID-19 as well as vaccination takes place every day from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
