Between January and March 2019, nearly 42,000 people were infected with measles in the DRC, the WHO indicates. The virus is raging in 24 provinces out of the 26 in the country. New cases continue to increase, according to the UN agency responsible for health.
Since 2010, the DRC has been confronted with measles epidemics. Last year, for example, the disease caused the death of 900 people.

To stem the current contagion, the WHO and UNICEF will launch a vast vaccination campaign across the country in mid-April.
Measles is an extremely contagious viral disease for which there is no curative treatment. It affects mainly children, but also unvaccinated adults.
The virus spreads when sick people cough or sneeze. Measles manifests itself with a high fever followed by the appearance of reddish patches on the skin.
