Born September 18, 1990 in Bujumbura; Papy Faty was a Burundian footballer who was currently playing for Malanti Chiefs in the Eswatini (Swaziland) Championship. The player died this Thursday on a football field in Eswatini, during a match.
Earlier in the year, the 28-year-old player had been advised to stop playing due to his heart condition. Disregarding the club and doctors' recommendations, his contract with Real Kings, in the South African first division, had been terminated.
Refusing to abandon football, the Burundian international resurfaced at Malanti Chiefs in Eswatini. And explaining his decision to continue his passion, "I decided not to go through with the operation because it wasn't a good idea," Papy had stated.
In 2016, Papy Faty had collapsed twice during matches due to his heart failure.
The player died on April 25, 2019 during a match with his Malanti Chiefs FC club, which he had joined for 6 months the previous January.
Despite his health condition, Papy Faty had taken part in Burundi's first qualification for a CAN (Africa Cup of Nations) final tournament. This is sad news for the football world, particularly for Burundians who were expecting him at CAN 2019.
May he rest in peace!
